Cheney baseball gets league win against Clarkston

During the second round of Great Northern League play, the Cheney High baseball team endured a 2-1 loss to West Valley, April 18, and defeated Clarkston, 5-2, two days later - snapping a five-game losing streak in the process. The Blackhawks ended the week with a doubleheader loss April 21 to East Valley.

Cheney lost 6-1 in game one and 7-2 in the nightcap.

"We get guys on base, but we're not getting them in, that's been our struggle," head coach Glenn Chamberlain said.

Against West Valley, Cheney scored its only run in the third inning after Cade VanWormer's single that scored Andrew Witt.

Jacob Lauber led his team with three hits while VanWormer, Jack Peabody and Devin Cook collected one apiece. Dylan Arthur (2-2) took the loss after starting.

No stats were available for the Clarkston game, but Chamberlain said the contest was exactly "how the guys should be playing."

"We played good defense, we got good hits and scored runs," he added.

Julian Chabot (2-1) picked up the win after throwing until the top of the seventh inning.

In game one against East Valley, Cheney prevented the shutout with their only run in the seventh inning. Of Cheney's four hits, Witt and Peabody had one double each while Riggs (0-3) took the loss.

In game two, the Blackhawks were up 2-0 until the Knights' took the lead with four runs in the fourth inning. Witt had another double. Nick Berman (0-1) took the loss.

Cheney (2-7 GNL, 7-10 overall) played Clarkston (4-3, 5-3) for the final time at home, April 26. They finish the regular season April 28 with a doubleheader against second-place Pullman (4-3, 4-4) on Senior Day.
