Despite the weather and subsequent rescheduling of games, the Cheney High baseball team did get some time on the field on March 25, with nonleague wins against Northeast A League’s Lakeside (3-2) and Medical Lake (5-4).

The Blackhawks were supposed to have a busier week with nonleague games against Lakeland (March 21) Clarkston (March 23), Medical Lake (March 24) and Lakeside (March 25). Both the Lakeland and Clarkston games were rescheduled because of rain while the game against the Cardinals was moved to Saturday afternoon.

Down 2-1 in the seventh inning in the Lakeside game, Cheney posted two runs with Jack Peabody’s two-RBI double to bring in Jacob Lauber and Luke Martin to give the Blackhawks the win.

Andrew Witt collected a couple of hits, while Koby Holt and Matthew Riggs had one apiece.

Julian Chabot (1-0) got the pitching win after he shared duties with Dylan Arthur.

“Everyone did well,” head coach Glenn Chamberlain said. Chamberlain added that Arthur and Chabot had moments where they lapsed but did not lose their composure.

“It was only our third day outside,” Chamberlain said. “We made some defensive errors, but taking ground balls off a gym floor is not the same as being outside.”

The Medical Lake game was the opposite for the Blackhawks. Cheney opened with three runs in the first inning and two in the second. The Cardinals prevented the shutout after a three-run third inning.

Peyton MacPherson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Holt was 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Devin Cook (1-0) got the pitching win after he shared the mound with Johnny Owings, throwing a combined three-hitter.

“Johnny has that good off-speed pitching and Cook throws harder,” Chamberlain said. “It was a good combination for us to have.”

Cheney’s March 28 Great Northern League opener against East Valley is rescheduled for March 31. The Knights came into the contest with an 0-3 overall record. The Blackhawks play Clarkston tonight (March 30) and travel to West Valley for a doubleheader against the Eagles (6-2), April 1. The Bantams have yet to play a game, while West Valley closed out the nonleague portion of their schedule March 23 with an 11-10 loss to Lakeland.

“I’m really proud with how they’ve played so far and how they’ve responded,” Chamberlain said. “It’s something we’ve been talking about in practice.”
