Cheney baseball defeats Sunnyside

The Cheney Blackhawks baseball team picked up a nonleague win on the road against Sunnyside, 11-3, March 18.

The Blackhawks took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, then added a run in the third before Sunnyside answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Head coach Glenn Chamberlain said his players were aggressive in the beginning of the game, implementing “small ball” and getting runners on base.

“But after we were up 5-0, we didn’t do a whole lot,” Chamberlain said. “What we’re trying to do (as coaches) is get guys dialed in on every pitch, instead of just stopping at 5-0 and celebrating for a bit. That comes with being a younger team. We’re trying to get them staying involved in the game.”

Cheney boosted their lead with four runs in the fourth inning and one each in the fifth and sixth frames.

“Part of our work is also getting players into situations, going over stuff on defense and working on the little things,” Chamberlain said. “Having them understand when there’s a guy on second base and where to hit the ball, having them understand situations without us coaches having to tell them.”

Chamberlain added that several underclassmen on varsity are “are stepping up,” at the plate. No individual stats were available as of press time.

Nick Berman (1-0) picked up the win on the mound after he shared pitching duties with Koby Holt, Matt Riggs and Dylan Arthur.

The Blackhawks (2-0 overall) played Idaho’s Lakeland at home, March 21 — a game that was rescheduled from March 14 due to weather conditions — then opened Great Northern League play in Clarkston against the Bantams the next day.

Cheney hosts Medical Lake in a nonleague game, Friday, March 24, then play Lakeside on the road the next day.
