The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team opens the 2017 Women’s Basketball Invitational today (Thursday, March 16) at Texas State University in San Marcos. Tip-off against the Bobcats is set for 3 p.m.
The Eagles earned their first-ever bid to the WBI on March 13 after going 18-13 in the regular season. This year’s appearance is the third time in the last five seasons that EWU has qualified for a national postseason tournament. They played in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in 2013 and 2015.
Eastern’s strength of schedule helped them earn an RPI of 134 and was likely a factor in their selection. Texas State enters the WBI at 16-14 with an RPI of 168.
If both the women and Eastern men win their games, it is possible they could play Monday, March 20 in a Reese Court doubleheader.
Eastern was knocked out the Big Sky Conference tournament in Reno on March 10 in a heartbreaking 61-59 semifinal loss to regular season champ Montana State. The Eagles opened with a 73-64 win over Idaho.
At Reno, Montana State’s Annika Lai sank a jumper with three seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a two-point lead. Eastern had a chance to tie or win but Tisha Phillips’ contested 3-point try from the top of the arc fell short. Delaney Hodgins scored a game-high 18 points, Phillips added 11 and Ashli Payne 10.
Hodgins scored a game-high 23 points against the Vandals while Phillips added 19 and Violet Kapri Morrow 15.
