When largely different lives — and their respective basketball worlds and cultures — first collided back in 1973 in Cheney, there was no telling what the result might be.

But fast-forward 40-plus years later and the results were records and a friendship that have largely stood the test of time.

Ron Cox was the star of the show in tiny Coulee City, Wash. where his team had won a coveted State B basketball title in 1973.

Ed Waters was somewhat of an afterthought in the basketball factory known as Crenshaw High School in the heart of Watts in Los Angeles.
