BBB plans to educate during Consumer Protection Week

As the Better Business Bureau of the Northwest observes National Consumer Protection Week (March 5-11) the organization is working to get the word out to a surprisingly vulnerable segment of the population.

The BBB released their annual Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report revealing consumers 18 – 24 are the most likely to lose money to a scam. The report also revealed the riskiest top five scams in the U.S. and Canada and include:

• Home improvement scams. • Fake checks and money orders.

• Employment scams.

• Online purchase scams.

• Advance fee loan scams.

The BBB suggests consumers follow the tips and tools below to make well-informed consumer decisions:

• Research. Before purchasing something or donating money.

• Update Software. Keep antivirus

software up-to-date.

• Shred documents. Shred all physical

copies of important documents.

• Do not give out personal information.

• Don’t fall prey to scammers. If

something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
