A routine traffic stop by Cheney police turned into a drug bust. The patrol officer identified the two occupants of the vehicle as Gonzaga University men's basketball players Josh Heytvelt, 20, and Theo Davis, 21. The car was searched and officers uncovered a small amount of marijuana as well as a quantity of psychedelic mushrooms.

The Medical Lake City Council came to the decision to surplus the city-owned Ball and Dodd funeral home property through a closed, sealed bid method of disposal for $200,000.

Several years of negotiations concluded as Gov. Christine Gregoire signed an agreement for the state to purchase just over 100 miles of railroad track between Cheney and Coulee City.

Feb. 20, 1997

Medical Lake Middle School listed three winners in an essay contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jason Lynch, Aaron Forbes and Jennifer Sponsler attended a dinner to receive their awards. The theme of the contest was westward expansion.

Senior Airman Anglea M. Hewson, Master Sgt. Andrew C. Isaccson and Staff Sgt. Duane C. Crockett were selected as the state's finest in the 1996 Soldier and Airmen of the Year contest.

Gabe Schafer and Mike Gibson carried the banner for the Cheney Blackhawk wrestling team as they joined the best grapplers from around the state for the Washington prep championships.

Feb. 19, 1987

The Medical Lake Kiwanis and approximately 80 senior citizens from the area honored Morris Riblett as the Senior Citizen of the Year. A key factor for his nomination and selection was his coordination of the distribution of U.S. Department of Agriculture food items in the Medical Lake, Four Lakes, Reardan and Edwall communities.

For their Valentine's Day project, Pat Bryant's third-graders from Reid Elementary made centerpieces for the tables in the cafeteria at the Cheney Care Center. Those students involved were Dylan Duckworth, Andy Taylor, Brant Phillips, Kathryn Taylor, Samantha Grimes, Barbara Beavers, Cecilia Sooy and Kirk Stiffler.

A 41-point win over Chewelah gave the Medical Lake girls basketball team their first undefeated season in the three years coach Val Bunce had been at the high school.

Feb. 24, 1977

Ronald Lemmen, the administrator of the 505 Second Street Cheney Care Center resigned his position on the Cheney Care Center Association's board of directors.

The mayor of Medical Lake signed a contract on behalf of the town with the Economic Development Administration for the construction of a new Town Hall.

Terry A. Swayer, 19, and Brad W. Danforth, 18, were arrested by the Cheney Police Department and charged as minors in possession of intoxicating liquor by consumption. The suspects were apprehended shortly after their vehicle was cited for parking in a no parking zone.

Feb. 23, 1967

A group of 89 representatives from civic, service and social organizations met this week to consider the Cheney School District's two special levies. A unanimous vote was given to endorse both.

Cheney High School accepted an invitation to join the AA Border League of Spokane.
