Silver Lake homeowners received an unofficial notice from the state Department of Ecology that their community was selected to receive one of four aquatic weed management grants. It was specially earmarked for conducting a contracted analysis and study of the Eurasian milfoil problem at the lake.

The Airway Heights City Council approved a “latecomer’s agreement” of water service and a new development in the area. The agreement extended 480 feet of water line on Lyons Road, south of U.S. Highway 2 for new homes and also for the instillation of a pair of fire hydrants.

Cheney High School sent 10 wrestlers to regional competition, the most in 19 years. Medical Lake High School also had nine athletes qualify to compete in the tournament held in Ellensburg.

Feb. 13, 1997

Kids from the United Church of Christ congregation spent part of their Sunday morning preparing special packages for youngsters in Ukraine. They brought shoes and socks to the church, which were bundled up and delivered to needy children thousands of miles away.

Four Cheney High School music students were named to the All-Northwest Band. Devin Otto, Patrick Carlson, Bethany Schoeff and R.L. Heyer were honored. They were chosen from a pool of entrants from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.

Jacob Meltzer, an eighth grader at Medical Lake Middle School, was named the junior high division winner of the Black History Month Essay Contest. Meltzer was awarded $100 for his efforts.

Feb. 12, 1987

Sharie Stearns, city council manager, was honored for her volunteer work within the community at the Medical Lake City Council meeting.

The Medical Lake Cardinal girls clinched the Northeast A League in basketball with victories over Newport and Riverside.

Cheney’s Frontier League champion wrestlers showcased their powers at the district tournament in Deer Park, capturing four first place titles en route to a 221-185 team victory over closest challenger West Valley.

Feb. 17, 1977

About 80 percent of the students attending Eastern Washington State College took an unscheduled vacation in support of a student strike against a number of bills that were before the legislature that would significantly raise tuition costs.

Medical Lake officials received confirmation that they had officially received $366,751 in Federal Local Public Works funds through the United States Department of Commerce-Economic Development Administration to expand and remodel the Town Hall.

Feb. 16, 1967

About 41 people signed up for “Cheney Days in Olympia,” sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, which filled a charter bus to its capacity.

A funeral service for William F. Martin was held. He was the oldest son of the late Gov. C.D. Martin and for 10 years was a vice president of the Martin Grain and Milling Co. in Cheney
