The Cheney City Council voted unanimously to confirm Robert Strope as the new City Administrator.

The National Association for Music Education Northwest Division selected Preston Terry from Medical Lake High School as a finalist to play in the All-Northwest honor’s concert.

Medical Lake Fire Department’s annual outstanding firefighter/emergency medical services (EMS) award winners were Ellen Fender, Firefighter of the Year and Fire Chief’s Award; Josh Wilkinson, Rookie Firefighter of the Year and Lisa Hoyt, Emergency Medical Services Award.

Jan. 30, 1997

Oboist Bethany Schoeff, a senior at Cheney High School, was chosen as one of the winners of the third annual Gonzaga University Young Artists’ Concerto/Aria Competition.

Long-time Eastern Washington University athletic administrator and coach Dick Zornes was appointed the school’s director of athletics.

The Medical Lake Cardinals’ wresting team deadlocked the Lakeside Eagles to share the league lead at 4-0-1 while also going 11-1-1 overall.

Jan. 29, 1987

Lila White, a cook at Cheney Care Center, was selected as their employee of the month. Residents and department heads voted on employees to determine who was given the award.

Second-graders in Esther Dalton’s class at Blair Elementary School had the chance to learn a little more about the world around them because Dalton traveled to several cities in South Africa. The teacher brought in some artifacts from her trip into the classroom.

The Hacienda Motel in Cheney had recently changed hands and new owner Daniel Pashniak anticipated expanding the facilities in his first couple months.

Feb. 3, 1977

Leslie Shultz and Diana Wilkerson from Cheney qualified for the Class II state meet in Bellevue for gymnastics. The two girls belonged to the Lincoln Heights Gymnastics Club.

Medical Lake High School senior Sandy Brumgard was crowned Winter Festival Princess at the Winter Festival Dance.

Two Cheney High School students were arrested and charged with first-degree theft after several stolen items were found at the residence of one of the suspects. The value of the stolen merchandise totaled $4,000 and included a 12-foot boat, two motors, a radio and more.

Feb. 2, 1967

The Medical Lake School board asked Superintendent Wes Huff to reconsider his resignation. After much consideration, Huff decided to stay on with the district.

Lenard Mace and Denny Adams, both of Cheney High School were selected to participate in People to People’s ambassador program to Europe.

John Davis and Howard Foos came up with the perfect 25 scores in the trap shoot at the Cheney Gun Club.
