The driver of a Nissan pickup truck could not escape the ditch along State Route 902 as a snowfall mixed with frigid overnight temperatures made the roadways icy and treacherous for drivers.
The Eastern Washington University’s student newspaper, “The Easterner” was protesting being relocated to the basement of Hargreaves Hall, saying it was inaccessible, remote and disrespectful to a student-run entity.
The Spokane Sliders U-12 select fastpitch softball team went undefeated in its season-ending tournament to win its league championship.

A basketball with Michael Jordan’s autograph was one of many items on hand at Auction Mania, a fundraiser jointly sponsored by the Cheney Chamber of Commerce and Eagle Athletic Association.
The Cheney High School wrestling team started their season by hosting a jamboree and continued to face some serious competition when they took part in the Deer Park Invitational.

Long-time Cheney High School athletics director, Jim Hatch resigned to return full-time to the classroom.
Students at Medical lake Middle School began a reading contest sponsored by the library and their reading classes.
Nine families in a co-op in Medical Lake got together and purchased a bus of their own so their children have a local ride to the Christian Heritage School in Edwall. There were 13 students who attended the Edwall school and their parents took turns driving them to and from the building.

Rickey Carl Dixon, 19, was arrested by Cheney police and later booked into the Spokane County Jail on second-degree burglary charges. Dixon was held in connection with a previous burglary of the Savage House Pizza Parlor on 122 College St., in which hundreds of dollars in coins were pried loose from several foosball and pinball machines.
Edward Kuhn from Cheney was scheduled to become a member of the Washington State Conservation Commission.
Cheney’s Cub Scout Pack 356 had a new Cubmaster, and for the first time in the orginzation’s history, the leader was a woman. Sally Duenow, a Den Mother for four years with the pack, took on the role.

Miss Lynda Whitinger, one of 12 campus-sponsored candidates, was crowned “Miss Eastern Days in Cheney.”
The Cheney High Blackhawks defeated the Colfax Bulldogs 56-49 in the season opener for both schools. Milo Huber’s 16 points and 12 by Nick Marsh led Cheney to the victory.
Seven new members received their Jaycees pins; Dave Gibb, David Bibb, Dave Eychaner, Jerry Riba, Ken Ryals, Richard Schweitzer and Dave Vargas.
