Cheney Police Chief Jeff Sale decided that rather than going over budget numbers for the City Council, he would let those numbers speak for themselves. Sale wanted to add two more officers to help the department keep pace with Cheney’s population growth.

The Medical Lake Library celebrated its 15th anniversary with a community-wide open house that treated several visitors to a book sale, story time workshops, historical displays and free refreshments.

Five members of Medical Lake’s Future Farmers of America chapter received top honors in the Horse Career Development division at the 79th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Students Kyle Kolhof, Anna Snyder, Brett Moriarty, Kayla Tisdall and Shastina Seger were a part of one of 45 teams participating at the event.

Nov. 28, 1996

Cheney Food Bank volunteers worked to fill grocery sacks with food, meeting the Thanksgiving needs of 160 local families.

Rich Dougan, Bob Anderson, Hugh Mills and Bill Nation were a part of the Cheney Kiwanis Club that purchased a stack of turkeys to help feed the needy.

Timothy Newkirk of Cheney and Alana Tripp of Medical Lake were both accepted into Washington State University’s honor program.

Garden Springs Elementary School, at the northeast corner of the Cheney School District, fell victim to the Icestorm’s electricity disabling grip.

Nov. 27, 1986

The driver of a van and two passengers were injured after the van they were in went out of control and rolled over in a ditch on Andrus Road. Washington State Patrol officer Gary Scott said the vehicle was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control.

Cheney High School senior Kathy Lynch was one of 10 students through the state nominated for a U.S. Senate internship.

Cadet Maj. Brian Denman received the award for Outstanding Air Force Junior ROTC unit in the state, one of the highest honors given.

Dec. 2, 1976

Jim Cox, Ed Dzedzy, Jerry Goertz and James Lot were members of Medical Lake Boy Scouts Troop 356 on hand in the Yellow Front parking lot to sell a variety of sturdy Christmas trees to area residents.

Airman Paul H. Holloway, of Airway Heights, was assigned to Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois after completing Air Force basic training.

Approximately $200 worth of loose change and an undetermined amount of cigarettes were stolen during a burglary at Cheney Bowl.

Dec. 1, 1966

The Cheney School District board of directors voted to accept a sum of money from Mrs. Nolan Brown as a memorial to her husband, the late Cheney mayor. The money will go toward the purchase of a much-needed electronic scoreboard for the high school football field.

The Cheney City Council signed a contract for library services from the Spokane County Rural Library District. An ordinance was also passed to establish a public library in Cheney and to create a five-member board of trustees.
