Nazarene Church invites residents to stop by and pick a pumpkin for Cheney Outreach

Cheney's Church of the Nazarene invites you to stop on by, say hello to church members and pick a pumpkin.

The church is holding its second annual pumpkin patch sale, with pumpkins of all sizes and shapes - as well as various other gourds - gathered in neat piles on its lawn next to Betz Road. Associate pastor Shane Endicott said there are over 600 "bulk" pumpkins along with an assortment of mini-pumpkins and gourds, with prices ranging from $1 for mini-pumpkins to $4 to $35 for larger models.

All proceeds from the sale, which lasts until 6 p.m. Halloween night, Oct. 31, go to Cheney Outreach to help with things such as paying heating and utility bills for people in need this winter.

The ability to donate all of the proceeds comes from obtaining the pumpkins through the non-profit fundraising organization, Pumpkins U.S.A. Pumpkins U.S.A. is headquartered in Greensboro, N.C., but has its farm located in high-desert New Mexico.

Endicott said the church raised almost $1,500 in its first year doing the pumpkin patch sale in 2015. All of those proceeds also went to Cheney Outreach.

"We're hoping to do better this year," he added.

Prior to 2015, the church held an annual harvest carnival to help fund its outreach efforts. Endicott said while the carnivals were always fun and well attended, it was difficult to really talk and get to know people in the community when they're streaming through the building. The pumpkin patch gives church and community members the opportunity for one-on-one contact and more personal interactions.

"We're just trying to reach out to our community, love on them and get to know them," Endicott said.

Pumpkin patch hours are Monday through Friday, 1 – 7 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. This Saturday, Oct. 22, the church is also providing a free bounce-house and face painting, along with bluegrass music by Cheney musician Merle Craner and friends from noon – 2 p.m.

Cheney Church of the Nazarene is located at 338 Betz Road.
