Sept. 28, 2006

Medical Lake’s comprehensive plan was amended, passing by all but one member of the City Council, for a zone change to a 5-acre, light industrial-zoned parcel located in Fox Ridge that will add more housing to the subdivision.

Cheney’s Justin Hale connected on a 53-yard field goal at Post Falls on Sept. 15, resulting in The Seattle Times contacting him for his efforts for not only the long field goal, but also going 3 for 3 in field goals against the Trojans. As a result, Hale was named the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association/Seattle Times 2A Player of the Week.

Oct. 2, 1996

New to the Cheney High School scene was the Key Club, an international organization that ties its CHS members to 140,000 other clubbers in approximately 4,000 clubs around the world. Officers who were elected to lead the new group were Tucker Urdahl, Colin Fiddes, Paula Olson and Allison Edgett.

Kids in grades 4–7 were invited to take part in Turnbull’s celebration of National Wildlife Refuge week. Turnbull staff members took the students on a walk through the refuge and taught them about nocturnal animals.

Downtown business owners were frustrated over the handling of four burglaries. The officer, Mark Hartfield, chose not to respond to a 3:30 a.m. call, which could have led to the apprehension of robbery suspects who got away with over $30,000 in cash and jewelry.

Sept. 25, 1986

The Cheney City Council voted 6-0 to offer to sell the surplus city property at U.S. State Route 904 and Presley Drive to Spokane County Fire District 3.

An accident occurred on Sterling Road, about one-quarter mile from Mullinix Road, when a train collided with a car driven by an area resident, Wayne B. Albertus, 64.

The city of Cheney earned AAA’s Pedestrian Safety Achievement Award for the 13th year without a pedestrian fatality.

Sept. 30, 1976

The Cheney City Council voted unanimously to make College Avenue and F Street between Second and Fifth one-way traffic routes.

Twenty-four area youth joined 3,000 other young people from every county in the state at the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup.

A $69,000 grant from the U.S. Bureau of Mines is supporting an Eastern Washington State College study of the “Center for Compiling Mineral Availabilities Systems Data.”

50 Years Ago

Sept. 29, 1966

A Cuban couple that had to wait nearly five years to join their two daughters in the United States arrived in Cheney via Miami. Their daughters had been taken care of by Catholic Charities in Spokane. The United Church of Christ had taken an interest in the couple, and with the urging of the Cheney Community Service Council, arranged to sponsor them.

EWSC opened its residence halls with an estimated record enrollment of over 4,000 when classes began.
