The city of Medical Lake announced that City Administrator Curt Kelling was stepping down from his job in order to take a similar position with the city of Chewelah.

The Cheney girl’s soccer team was off to a good start in the Great Northern League by defeating West Valley, 2-0 and Clarkston, 7-1.

Medical Lake used a dominating, rushing attack along with a smart, focused defensive effort and cruised to a 32-7 win over the Oroville Hornets for the Cardinals’ first football win since 2004.

Sept. 19, 1996

Four burglaries and an armed robbery rocked the security of Cheney within a span of 48 hours resulting in over $32,000 worth of cash and merchandise stolen. The four burglaries happened at Showies Tavern, Jim and Dodie’s Silverworks, Goofy’s Tavern and another attempted burglary at Bill’s Tavern. The armed robbery took place at the Eagle Shop in the PUB on Eastern Washington University’s campus.

Sharon Hagelin and her mother Dorthy Wagner were ready for the grand opening of Cheney’s newest business, Rose of Sharon.

Sept. 18, 1986

David Birks, the director of the Regional Solid Waste Disposal Project, updated the Medical Lake City Council on an alternative site for the waste-to-energy plant just west of Geiger Boulevard, next to the Airport Business Park.

Cheney High School’s fall sports teams opened their seasons mostly with success. The football team easily defeated Connell, while the boys and girls tennis teams defeated West Valley.

From a list of applicants that started at more than 500, Cheney’s 10-year-old Stephanie Reiman ended up in fourth place at the Miss Washington Pre-Teen Pageant.

Sept. 16, 1976

Spokane County Fire District No. 3 had a special levy request of $93,000 that would finance three major and necessary improvements to the fire fighting abilities and equipment of the district.

The Cheney Education Association overwhelmingly voted in favor of going into fact finding when presented with the Cheney School District’s offer of the 6 percent raise for the beginning teacher’s salary.

The Cheney Care Center Association collected $123,228 and officials expected to be nearing the halfway mark in their continuing effort to raise $250,000 for the construction of a new care center.

50 Years Ago

Sept. 15, 1966

Considerable pencil sharpening was needed to trim the Cheney’s expense fund. A deficit existed of $13,749.

Residence halls at Eastern Washington State College opened for the 1966-67 school year. More than 4,000 students, a record for the 76-year-old university, were expected to enroll for the fall quarter.

Enrollment in Cheney schools exceeded the previous year’s figure by almost 250 more students. On the first day of school, Cheney High had 157 in the sophomore class, 127 in the junior class, and 137 in the senior group.
