Four second half goals earn EWU win over UBC

The Eastern Washington University soccer team erupted for four goals in the second half against the University of British Columbia to win an exhibition contest, 4-1, on Aug. 13 in Cheney.

Junior Savannah Hoekstra scored two goals in just 48 seconds to rally the Eagles from a 1-0 first-half deficit. Fellow junior Chloe Williams netted the team’s third goal in the 70th minute and sophomore Jenny Chavez capped off the scoring for Eastern, with her goal off an Aimie Inthoulay corner kick in the 86th minute.

“I think teams are always vulnerable over the next five to six minutes when you score a goal on them,” EWU head coach Chad Bodnar said of the quick succession goals from Hoekstra. “We forced a turnover in the midfield and ‘Savvy’ jumped all over it and scored again.”

Eastern opens its 2016 non-conference season Friday, Aug. 19 with a 3 p.m. matchup against Grand Canyon University at home. Admission to all Eastern Washington regular season home games is free. That contest is followed by a Monday, Aug. 22 meeting at noon against Utah State.
