Airway Heights commission gets US-2 revitalization, bond updates

The Aug. 10 Airway Heights Planning Commission meeting agenda included no actions items, but several updates.

Development Services Director Derrick Braaten informed the commission that staff held an open house on July 21 to gather citizen input for the U.S. Highway 2 revitalization project and chapter four of the city’s comprehensive plan. Braaten said the comprehensive plan needs to be updated by June 2017, but the commission is on track to have most of the work done by December.

The revitalization plan includes details from previous proposals as well as concepts for a shared use path, increased vegetation, bike paths and a unified theme on both sides of the highway. The project encompasses the stretch of Highway 2 from the eastern city limits at Deer Heights Road to the western border at Craig Road.

Braaten said staff is trying to get feedback on several elements of both the revitalization and comprehensive plans, including new designs for the entry signs at the western and eastern city limits, and features in the downtown corridor.

Staff will also be at the Airway Heights Days festival to gather feedback from the community on both plans.

The commission will have a special Sept. 7 meeting for a formal workshop regarding both plans.

“We’ll do our normal meeting and have the workshop toward the end,” Braaten added.

Braaten also informed the commission that there is a new Dairy Queen just past O’Reilly on U.S. Highway 2.

“That was kind of a surprise,” Braaten said. “That was one of the fastest moving projects in the nine years since I’ve been here.”

Commissioner Matt Pederson noted that the city’s recreation bond is passing. As of press time the bond was receiving 61.12 percent (503-320 votes) of the vote total.

“It’s been a long time coming for the community,” Pederson said.

Pederson also encouraged residents to step forward and offer their input and services in the recreation center’s development. Braaten added that staff will engage the public to see what details they want for the recreation center.

“The city wants that feedback to make sure the center is what the community wants,” Braaten said. “It’s viable the doors could open in spring 2018.”
