Candidate Q&A with Tom Horne

1. We need more good jobs. Logging and mining built this district. Both have been substantially reduced by EPA regulations and by laws that stop logging and mining projects. I would call for congressional review of the EPA and it's regulations, not passed by Congress, and make people suing to stop projects put some skin in the game with loser pay provisions.

2. The House is not deadlocked; they have a Republican majority. The Senate is deadlocked with a Republican majority because of their filibuster rule. That rule can be changed by a simple majority. The whole thing is deadlocked because we are in a highly partisan era, and have a highly partisan president whose announced intention was to "Fundamentally change the U.S." Only 51.1 percent voted for him last time, no mandate. The rest don't want the U.S. changed.

3. Small towns up north need relief from EPA and lawsuits and cheap Canadian wood products to get logging and mining going again. Spokane needs B&O tax relief so we don't lose business to Idaho. In Congress I would propose a specific law to expedite a land swap so the casino could be built elsewhere to remove all question of impact on Fairchild.

4. Address health care costs by tort reform, capping medical malpractice pain and suffering judgments and lawyer's fees and making everyone pay the same rate for service. Address insurance costs by opening up the market for competition by removing state mandates and allowing standard plans to be sold nationwide. We need more good jobs for our citizens. Part of the problem is illegal immigration. We are under no obligation to provide jobs for people fleeing failing third-world nations that are having population explosions. The other part of the wage problem is that we have shipped a large portion of our manufacturing overseas, chasing low wages, low energy costs and lax environmental regulations. I would propose legislation opposing huge multilateral trade deals in favor of bilateral ones, following a model agreement based on low tariffs and rapid resolution of trade problems.
