Volunteers from Young Life of Medical Lake spent an entire summer weekend helping a local family get some much-needed renovations done to their home.

Cheney Trading Company owners Bonner Foods, Inc., expanded their market with the purchase of three former Tidyman’s stores, including the Latah Creek branch located on the Cheney-Spokane Road near U.S. Highway 195.

The Eastern Washington University football team was picked to finish anywhere from second to sixth as the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches and media polls were released at the Big Sky Conference Summer Kickoff in Park City, Utah.

Cheney’s T.J. Mustard and his Spokane Area Children’s Chorus Ensemble mates sang their way into an invitation to the land of Mozart for Austria’s 1000-year anniversary celebration.

Amy Amsden, a 1993 graduate of Cheney High School, was awarded a $500 College of Education Alumni Association Scholarship to attend Washington State University.

Members of the Cheney Track Club joined more than 1,100 track and field athletes for the Region XIII Junior Olympics Championships at Washington State University.

July 24, 1986

A 38-year-old Spokane man was transported to Eastern State Hospital after a Cheney Police Officer, Karl Morrison, responded to a call from Burlington Northern crews, who reported a man sitting in the train station lobby wearing nothing but a pair of shoes and socks.

About 22,000 Arkansas largemouth bass fry recently made Eastern Washington’s Sprague Lake their new home in the latest of the Washington Department of Game’s effort to rebuild the fishery there.

Cheney High School graduate Karri Lunke played in the state All-Star basketball game at Auburn High School.

July 29, 1976

The Cheney Care Center fund drive was extended in hopes of reaching their $250,000 goal. The total funds donated so far were $80,160.

Over 450 people entered the yearly swimming classic set for Hagelin Park. Twenty-five are entered from Cheney’s EWRA (Eastern Washington Recreation Association) swim team and six are entered from the Medical Lake-Fairchild area. The swimmers are aged six to 18 and competed for $1,350 in awards.

July 21, 1966

A fire destroyed the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bunker overlooking Williams Lake.

The vote on a public library being established in Cheney was placed before city voters at the primary election as a result of action by the City Council.

Trucks from Spokane County Fire Protection District 3 were kept on the run this week, reaching up to nine calls on Wednesday.
