Medical Lake starts strong, fades in Wood Bat

Home field was not very kind to Medical Lake as they hosted a pod at last weekend's Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic.

Medical Lake started off on the right foot with a big 11-2 win over Shadle Park No. 2 in the pod's first game at Holliday Field. The day concluded with a 4-0 loss to the Yakima Junior Beetles and that seemed set the stage for the remainder of the weekend.

Kyle Thompson threw a complete game against Shadle, striking out 10 and surrendering four hits, all singles. Drew Hostetter was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, driving in three runs. Noah Olsonberg also went 3 for 4 driving in three runs. Phil Murray went 2 for 3 with two doubles and scoring three runs.

In the Yakima shutout, "The bats went cold as we were unable to generate anything offensively," head coach Kerry Kelly wrote in an email. Yakima held Medical Lake to just two hits, singles by Thompson and Aaron Davis from Davenport.

Saturday began with 12-5 loss to Premier sports 16U team and lost to eventual junior division champion, Spokane Crew, 12-2. Premier rallied from a 4-3 deficit scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth and four in the fifth to break open the game. There were no stats available from the Crew game.

The tournament concluded Sunday with a 21-1 drubbing at the hands of rival, Cheney's 17U team. MedicalLake was no hit by Cheney's Johnny Owings.

"The boys came out of the gate strong and competed," Kelly said. "By day-three you could see they hit a wall." Hosting took its toll, Kelly said as the players were at the field at 6:30 a.m. each day and did not get away until 10 p.m.

Earlier in the week Medical Lake earned a pair of key American League wins with a doubleheader sweep of Mead, 6-2 and 9-1.

Tyler Edison went 3 for 3 scoring three times and driving in two runs in the opener. Hostetter also added a pair of doubles, driving in one run.

In game two, Hostetter threw a complete game striking out 14 and tossing a three-hitter while Murray went 2 for 3 driving in one run. Trevor Hurt Moran doubled twice, scored a run and had a pair of RBIs. Ben Evans had a triple and scored.

Medical Lake returns to league play with a game Friday at home versus West Valley at 6:30 p.m. and then versus Deer Park in a Saturday doubleheader at 5 p.m.
