The Cheney 15U Summerhawks baseball team began their regular season with a 5-2 loss against the Spokane Expos, June 21, followed by a 17-3 thumping from Tradesmen International at Avista Stadium, June 23.

Head coach Glenn Chamberlain did not have individual stats for either game at press time, but he noted that none of the Expos’ runs in the June 21 game were earned and added that Peyton McPherson (0-1) “pitched a great game.”

“We played a great game,” he said. “We had hits, just not when we needed them. We had some errors, but that is a part of baseball. My goal and coach (Mike) Cagle’s goal is to make these guys better players and get them ready for spring.”

In the game against Tradesmen International, Issac Chamberlain (0-1) took the loss on the mound after he shared pitching duties with Rory Schuller and Kyle Peabody.

Chamberlain said his team came into the Tradesmen game with three injured players and brought in Carson Duncan to fill the roster.

During the game, Chamberlain said he noticed some of the players’ heads were hanging low and gave them a pep talk.

“I told the guys, ‘that’s going to happen in sports,” Chamberlain said, referring to Tradesmen’s win over his team. “’But it’s about how you handle adversity. You still have to play. You don’t want to just mail it in. It’s a bad habit to get into.’”

The Summerhawks (0-2) are in fifth place in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball League 15U league standings. They played RBC, out of Post Falls, June 28. RBC came into the game after a 9-7 loss to the Expos on June 23.

Cheney will play Tradesmen International today (June 30) at the Old University High School baseball field.
