June 29, 2006

Three Cheney High School graduates crashed a truck 120 feet down a mountain in Montana, leaving one man, 21-year-old Aaron Rockey, with three broken vertebrae, a broken shoulder and some broken ribs.

In American Legion baseball, Medical Lake was trailing by one in their last at-bat at Cheney. Medical Lake scored twice for a 6-5 victory, breaking a seven game losing streak for the Cardinals.

June 27, 1996

The Cheney Track Club hosted the Inland Northwest Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships on June 22, bringing together 400 youth athletes from throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho, plus a cultural exchange group from Australia.

Sommer Lynn Kraft of Cheney was awarded a $3,500 Killin academic scholarship for the 1996-97 academic year at Eastern Washington University.

July 3, 1986

Two persons were arrested for the kidnapping and robbery of a Spokane County woman. Loupita Marie Martiniz and Robert L. Graff abducted the young woman near the Longhorn Barbecue on Highway 2. They forced her into their car at gunpoint and robbed her of her jewelry and brought her to Medical Lake, forcing her to call her parents.

Members of the Cheney and Medical Lake communities had a chance to travel from Cheney to Ritzville with Sen. Dan Evans to discuss various issues.

June 24, 1976

The city of Cheney passed a resolution to participate in the development of two nuclear power plants which will cost the city $460,000 per year for the length of the 30-year contract.

The 1975-76 school year at Eastern Washington State College was one of increasing fiscal problems, minority unrest and decreasing academic quality in the classroom, according to Dr. Phillip Marshall, acting president.

The Cheney Care Center Association was cleared to accept donations to its $250,000 fund drive for construction of a new facility to be located near the high school.

50 Years Ago

June 30, 1966

Cheney’s official population for 1966 was confirmed by the state census board as being 4,166. This does not include college students, only residents.

Eastern Washington State College summer quarter enrollment reached a record of 2,620, said Don Manson, EWSC registrar.

Approximately 330 swimmers, representing 19 teams, are entered in the Inland Empire Junior Olympics swim meet at the city pool.
