Cheney School Board appoints Calvert, Short as student advisers

The Cheney School Board went through a light agenda at its May 25 meeting, which included appointing the board's student advisers for the 2016-17 school year.

The board reappointed junior Bridget Calvert as one of the student advisers. She served in that role this year, along with graduating senior Tea Hickman.

Calvert, who will be a senior next year, wrote in her application that she wants to "make deeper connections with board members and contribute my ideas and thoughts" during her second year on the board."

The board appointed Megahn Short as the other student adviser. Short has been a home room representative, involved in leadership and is a mentor for the Cheney Municipal Youth Court.

In her application, Short wrote that as a student adviser she wants to help "communicate to the school board what is happening at the high school."

In other action items, the board approved an annual resolution that authorizes Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) to oversee extracurricular athletics and activities. It also reappointed Director Mitch Swenson as the liaison for the district.

"I spoke with him and he agreed to it," School Board President Henry Browne said of Swenson, who was absent from the meeting.

In other business:

• The board approved the second readings of revised policies "Religious-Related Activities, "Qualifications of Attendance and Placement" and "Removal of Student During School Hours."

• It also had the first reading of revised Policy No. 2153 "Non-Curriculum-Related Student Groups."

• Kassidy Probert, the district's director of financing, announced that enrollment for May was at 4,319 full-time equivalent students, an increase of 20 students from April.

• The board also acknowledged Hickman and Calvert for their service to the board this year.
