Some of Cheney High’s varsity track and field members may be doing a little over-the-shoulder looking, thanks to the Blackhawks junior varsity squads.
The Cheney girls scored 178 points to capture the District 7 JV Invitational held May 5 in Pullman, with the Blackhawks boys notching 109 for third. West Valley easily captured the boys’ title, while the host Greyhound girls finished just 18 points back of Cheney in second.
Capturing district titles for the girls were Alexandrea Gardner in the 100-meter dash, Julia Gundlach in the 1,600, Shannen Gladden in the 100 hurdles and Kasey Bein in the 300 hurdles. The 4x200 relay team of Samantha Anderson, DJ DesJarlais, Gardner and McKenna Hodgson was first as was the 4x400 team, no names available.
Second-place finishes on the track went to Gundlach in the 800, DesJarlais in the 300 hurdles, the 4x100 team (Bein, DesJarlais, Mariah Gaul and Gladden) and the 4x400 team (Jessica Vietzke, Shelby Elliott, Alexis Ewen and Gundlach). Earning second-place finishes in the field events were Abby Walden in the shot put, Bryanna Sammuels in the javelin and Alexis Ewen in the high jump.
For the boys, James Magill and Max Pierson ran to wins in the 3,200 and 110 hurdles, Josh Burts in the shot put, Hyrum McCombie in the discus and Ryan Reimer-Golden in the javelin. Reimer-Golden was second in the shot put, while the team of Mason Hilzendeger, Aiden McCrum, Saul Bautista and Magill was second in the 4x400.
Both Cheney varsity squads return to action this Friday at the District 7 meet, which kicks off at noon at West Valley High School in Millwood.
