Staffing continues to be an issue with the Cheney Police Department, which so far has used 70 percent of their overtime budget with the year not halfway over.

Cheney defeated West Valley-Yakima 2-0 and moved onto the state 3A soccer quarterfinals.. Mitch Weller and Adam Zakrezeski scored goals.

The future residents of Cheney, a number expected to approach 11,000 by 2015, will be housed primarily in an area north of Betz Road between Murphy and Normal Park roads, according to new information provided by the Cheney Planning Commission.

Cheney High School baseball coach Terry Regnier will not be returning to that position in the spring of 1997 following a suspension levied by the district over a pushing incident involving a student and soccer player at the school. The punishment was announced by Superintendent Dr. Philip Snowdon.

Cheney beat Colville 5-2 and 5-4 in a best-two-out-of-three baseball playoff, winning the series two games to one. Matt Caslon pitched six strong innings in the clincher and had relief help from Bryan Woodard.

Paul Schmidt was hired by the city of Cheney as its new Public Works Director and will oversee a department of 11 people.

The Medical Lake Cardinals beat the Kettle Falls Bulldogs 9-7 in a Northeast A League baseball playoff game and advanced to meet Ephrata. Russell Dunham had four hits and three RBIs for the Cards.

The NFL expansion Seattle Seahawks will arrive in Cheney at the end of June to begin what was described as a two-month training camp in preparation for their season.

The margin was narrow but the Medical Lake School District passed a $150,000 maintenance and operations levy with an approval of 60.3 percent.

The Legislative Budget Committee voted 7-3 to release $2.4 million for construction and equipping of Phase 4 of the Eastern Washington State College athletic and physical education complex.

Medical Lake’s community float was to receive a special police escort from its temporary home at Geiger Field to and from the Thursday evening Lilac Festival Torchlight Parade and the Lilac Festival Parade staged Saturday afternoon in downtown Spokane.
