Cheney establishes irrigation schedule, effective immediately

While this winter and spring have been wetter than the past two years, the Cheney Public Works Department is asking residents and businesses to follow a just released schedule for outdoor watering practices. The schedule is effective immediately in order to maximize potable water pumping efficiency and maintain safe reservoir levels.

Residential customers with odd-numbered addresses should water Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5 – 10 a.m. and 7 – 11 p.m. Residential customers with even-numbered addresses should water Monday, Wednesday and Saturday during the same time periods.

Commercial customers should water Monday, Wednesday and Friday from midnight to 6 a.m. Automatic sprinklers on Cheney School District facilities should be set to water from midnight to 8 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with manual watering set for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6 – 10 a.m.

Automatic sprinklers at city parks will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from midnight to 8 a.m., with manual sprinklers set for Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 – 10 a.m. Sprinklers at Sutton, Moos and Salnave parks may differ as these parks are irrigated from a well not attached to the city’s main system.

Cheney High grad Cara Fitzpatrick wins Pulitzer Prize

Cheney High School alumna and former Free Press reporter Cara Fitzpatrick has been named one of five Tampa Bay Times reporters to win the Pulitzer Prize, journalisms highest award.

According to an April 18 Tampa Bay Times story, the paper was named the winner of two Pulitzer’s for investigative reporting. Fitzpatrick was part of a team that included her husband, Michael LaForgia, and fellow reporter Lisa Gartner that won a Pulitzer for a five-part series of stories that traced the decline of black student achievement in five schools in Florida’s Pinellas County, where Tampa Bay is located.

In a Feb. 18 Cheney Free Press story, Fitzpatrick said the series was a partnership between the Times education team, investigative team and data team that involved not only the three reporters but also a couple editors and other staff members. It required 18 – 20 months of work, including one year of information gathering through interviews done by going door-to-door and to events such as Little League games as well as public records collection before the first installment was published.

Fitzpatrick, LaForgia and Gartner’s work on the series also garnered them a George Polk Award in February.

First half property taxes due April 30

The Spokane County Treasurer’s office is reminding county taxpayers that the first half property taxes are due by April 30. If payments are mailed to the Treasurer’s Office through the U.S. Postal Service, they must be postmarked on or before the due date.

Property owners need to be sure payments dropped in a Postal Service box or station are early enough so they are postmarked before the tax deadline. State law dictates county treasurers recognize only the cancellation date applied by the Postal Service to determine timeliness of payments.

Payments should be mailed to:

Spokane County Treasurer

P.O. Box 199

Spokane WA, 99210-0199

Other payment options include ACH, debit and credit cards via the Internet, in office, or the Treasurer’s phone system at (509) 477-4713 and pressing option 2. Vendor fees apply for using these services. Please visit the county website at http://www.spokanecounty.org/treasurer.

Treasurer’s Office normal business hours are 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Thursday and 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday. The office will remain open until 4 p.m. Friday, April 29.
