West Plains fourth-graders score high in Math is Cool competition

Elementary schools from Cheney and Medical Lake competed in the fourth-grade Math is Cool competition, April 15, at Whitworth University in Spokane.

The competition began with a 15-minute round of mental math where each student was asked eight questions.

The next round consisted of a 40-question individual test, followed by two team tests - one multiple choice and one fill in the blanks - and relays. After dinner teams competed in three rounds of College Bowl with 10 questions each.

In team scores, Windsor Elementary School finished first in Division I B with 69 points while Betz Elementary took second (67) and Salnave Elementary was third (51).

Snowdon Elementary finished fourth in Division I A with 81 points. Michael Anderson Elementary took third in Division II with 60 points.

In individual scores, Betz's Isaac Huber was first in Division I B with 46 points. Windsor Elementary's Chandler Kimball, finished second with 42 points after he won a tiebreaker against his classmate and third-place Evan Stinson with 42. Coen Caldwell, also from Windsor, was sixth with 36 points while Betz's Callie Potter was seventh with 36. Salnave Elementary's Joy Assonken was 10th with 34.

Michael Anderson Elementary's Martin Clapper finished second in Division II with 54 points and Hallett's Allison McClure was ninth with 34. Snowdon's Ryan Hanson finished ninth in Division I A with 39 points.

The following students were awarded Best in School: McClure, Hallett Elementary; Clapper, Michael Anderson; Huber, Betz Elementary; Assonken, Salnave Elementary; Hanson, Snowdon Elementary; Monique Ramey, Sunset Elementary and Kimball, Windsor Elementary.
