Lady Blackhawks open Great Northern League softball

The Cheney High softball team manufactured a split in action last week with the Great Northern League’s Spokane Valley schools.

The Lady Blackhawks gave up nine runs in the first inning at West Valley and never recovered in an 18-4 loss to the Eagles March 29. Cheney shrugged off the blowout and put up a big inning of its own at home against East Valley, using timely hitting and capitalizing on some of the Knights eight errors for a 10-5 win April 2.

Meghan Krantz continued to hit well for the Lady Blackhawks, going 4 for 4 with an RBI single in the six-run second and a solo home run in the third against East Valley. Krantz had three RBIs and also scored three runs as Cheney lit up the scoreboard with 12 hits.

Courtney Johnstone added two singles while Rachel Barsness also had a pair of hits, including a 2-RBI triple in the second. Freshman Cheyenne Gleave went the distance on the mound for her third win of the season.

Last Tuesday at West Valley, Cheney tried to rally after falling behind by eight runs after the Eagles nine-run first. The Lady Blackhawks closed to within 9-3 with two runs in the third, only to have the home team post another nine-spot in the bottom of the fourth, and the game end in the fifth on the 10-run rule.

Gleave took the loss on the mound, but collected two hits to lead her team at the plate as Cheney managed just singles against West Valley’s pitching and defense.

The Lady Blackhawks go to 2-2 in the Great Northern League, 3-4 overall, and are sitting in third place.
