CHS to be new site for regular school board meetings

The Cheney School board breezed through a quick agenda at its March 23 meeting.

In action items, the board approved the proposed calendar for meetings for the 2016-17 school year. Cheney High School’s library will be the site for the regular board meetings instead of Betz Elementary School’s Viking Room. Superintendent Dr. Deb Clemens said the Viking Room is where Betz serves lunches during the day and setting up for the board meetings in the evening “is more work for staff.”

Regular board meetings will still be at 6 p.m. Meetings at individual schools will also be at 6 p.m., with a school improvement plan discussion at 5:15.

There will be special school visits at CHS, Sunset and Windsor elementary schools at 1 p.m. with a 3:15 p.m. school improvement plan discussion and the board meeting at 4 p.m.

The board also approved recinding Policy 6021, which relates to revolving fund bank accounts. Kassidy Probert, executive director of finance, said the board passes a resolution at the beginning of each school year that establishes revolving fund bank accounts for the year and the staff members who can sign them.

“Because the board passes the resolution the policy (established in 2009) is redundant,” Probert said.

Jeff McClure, director of maintenance and operations, gave a report on the Information and Condition of Schools (ICOS) Asset Prevention program.

McClure said all of the buildings maintain the required level of above 60 percent. In the report, Cheney and Westwood middle schools and Snowdon Elementary School, which were built three years ago, are at 100 percent.

“You’re going to see high numbers because we’ve put a lot of money into the buildings,” McClure said.

McClure added that the district can bring the ratings up on buildings if they maintain them or install new features, such as a new security system

“If the rating drops below that 60 percent, people will notice,” McClure said.
