Kindergarten registration opens

Kindergarten registration is open for both Cheney and Medical Lake school districts.

Forms families must complete in advance of registration include: student registration form, student health form, certificate of immunization, home language survey form, elementary student housing questionnaire, secondary student housing questionnaire, parent permission slip and busing registration form.

Families must also bring their child’s birth certificate or proof of birth, and immunization records when they register. Additional forms will need to be completed at the school.

EWU trustees approves department name change

Eastern Washington University announced its College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Social Work has a new name: the College of Social Sciences (CSS).

The university’s board of trustees approved the name change at its Feb. 26 meeting.

“The new name of the College of Social Sciences maintains the uniqueness of the academic disciplines within our College, while making it more identifiable to all,” CSS Dean Dr. Vickie Shields, said. “This change will not only improve the visibility of the College within the community, but it will help strengthen our fundraising potential and allow us to maintain the strong ties we already have to various agencies and organizations, projects and ventures.”

Shields also notes the new name will help in promoting social science degrees to students, potential employees and the community as a whole.

Downtown Student Gallery showcases Cheney artwork

The EWU Downtown Student Gallery will host the Teen Nation Creations exhibit, featuring artwork from Cheney Middle School students, March 4-29. Admission to the gallery is free. The gallery is located at 404 Second St.

Various mediums such as sculptures, paintings and prints will be on display. An artist reception will be held on Friday, March 11 from 5-7 p.m. with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres provided.

Hallett Elementary to hold book fair during conferences

Families are invited to stop in at the Hallett Elementary School library during parent/teacher conference week to look at and purchase books at the Scholastic Book Fair. Selections include paperback and hardback books for preschoolers through 12th-grade, parents and teachers. The book fair will be open March 7-9, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., March 10 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and March 11 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

All proceeds from the book fair benefit the Hallett Elementary School library.
