Cheney gymnastics takes second at districts, head to regionals

The Cheney High gymnastics team capped their regular season finishing second place out of five teams with 143.475 points at the 3A Greater Spokane League districts, Jan. 27, at Mead High School.

“We took second and had our highest team score of the season,” head coach Jaelyn Gardner said. “The girls did well.”

Makayla Miller (30.650), Olivia Hovater (30.40), Alexis Miller (28.900) and Katie Clemens (27.400) compiled a 7-8-9-10 finish in All Around scoring.

In individual events, Alexis Miller was fifth in the vault (7.850) and ninth in the floor exercise (8.400).

Makayla Miller was sixth in the balance beam (8.000), eighth in the uneven bars (6.900) and ninth in the vault (7.400) and 10th in the floor exercise (8.350).

Hovater was seventh in both the vault (7.600) and balance beam (7.950) and eighth in the floor exercise (8.450) and ninth in the bars (6.400). Clemens was ninth in the beam (7.650).

Gardner said her team made a lot of progress since the start of the season, particularly after the Jan. 20 meet where they took fifth.

“It was a 4A meet and it really opened our eyes, it was a very loud environment,” Gardner said. “It had an effect on us. We recovered well and put that meet behind us.”

The team will compete in regionals, Feb. 13, at Mead High School. Gardner said she has some time to figure out which events certain athletes will compete in.

“The lineup isn’t set yet, but the all of the girls will be going to regionals as a team,” Gardner said.
