The Cheney School Board District Director 4 election is the only position to come down to one candidate: Stacy Nicol.

Current board director Rick Mount originally filed for reelection but withdrew his name in May. In an earlier interview with the Cheney Free Press, Mount, who’s been a board member for 16 years, stated several reasons why he withdrew and thought it was “time for some new blood” on the board.

Nicol grew up in Cheney and attended Betz Elementary, as well as junior high and high school in Cheney. After graduating in 1994, she attended and graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor of science in education, K-8. She later received her masters degree in curriculum and instruction from Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass.

Nicol taught in the Cheney School District from 1999-2006. After staying home to help take care of her children, she returned to teaching with the Washington Virtual Academies in 2009.

“I have taught everything from first through eighth grade, including Title 1 reading and technology education,” Nicol said. “I currently teach second and third grade.”

Nicol’s father is a retired EWU professor and her mother is a nurse.

Nicol said she wants to be an experienced positive voice for students throughout the district.

“With an extensive background in and passion for education, I will advocate for the educational needs of all our community’s children,” Nicol said. “I also understand that, as a board, we must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff, students and the community at large, encouraging an on-going, open dialog.”

For Nicol, part of that open dialog is striving to engage more community members in the discussion and solution of the district’s growing population and infrastructure issues.

“We have so many amazing resources and ideas that come directly from our community,” Nicol said. “Now it is time to reflect on the outcome of the bond, gather input and move forward because the facility challenges are real and our students need a better high school in which to learn.”
