For the first time in history, Eastern Washington University surpassed the 10,000 mark in enrollment as officials announced fall registration numbers of 10,285.

Turnbull Wildlife Refuge was the recipient of a restoration of over two acres of its wetlands thanks to support from Ducks Unlimited.

Tight-end Matt Brunell scored twice as the Cheney Blackhawks earned a 31-6 win over Rogers in the annual Homecoming football game.

A new city ordinance that required residents to both install and maintain their sidewalks was drawing concerns from the community.

A vacant Eastern State Hospital building was a step closer to becoming a regional juvenile detention facility to be known as Martin Hall following a meeting of a committee studying the proposal.

Leading 19-0, the Cheney Blackhawks survived a furious comeback that ended as an East Valley field goal sailed wide of the goalposts for a 19-16 Frontier League football victory. Chad Randall scored twice and Earon Davis once for Cheney.

Oct. 17, 1985

The American Federation of Teachers Local 1823 at Eastern Washington University was the first group to officially call for the resignation of school president H. George Frederickson.

Four Cheney-area dentists, Richard Roccanova, Robert Stockton, Thomas Whitfield and Ken Collins were to join forces to provide preventative care for Betz Elementary School.

Cheney defeated West Valley 27-26, rallying from a 26-13 deficit with Chris Templeton scoring the winning touchdown.

Oct. 16, 1975

The Cheney City Council approved a one-time 75 cent household tax to be collected in February 1976 to pay the city’s subsidy for funding the “Magic Bus” that brings students to and from Spokane to EWU.

Ray Soltero was appointed by the Cheney City Council to fill the opening on the council left by the recent resignation of Gene Teves who was moving due to his job.

Quarterback Kelly Williams threw three touchdown passes to lead the Cheney Blackhawks to a 49-0 Frontier League football victory over Clarkston on the road.

Oct. 15, 1965

A project by the Cheney Lions Club turned an area of weeds and rocks into a new city park named after longtime club member Earl Moos.

After spending 36 years on the job, Gladys Gilmore retired as the Medical Lake postmistress.

The undefeated Eastern Washington State College Savages, the No. 9 ranked football team according to a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll, were scheduled to travel to Caldwell, Idaho, to meet the College of Idaho.
