Off to its best start in school history, the Eastern Washington University soccer team will play its first home game of the 2015 regular season this Friday, Aug. 28, against California State-Bakersfield at 4 p.m.

The Eagles earned a pair of road wins, 2-1 over the University of Texas El Paso, Aug. 21 and in double overtime, 2-1 against New Mexico State, Aug. 23.

In the opener against UTEP, Eastern got goals from sophomore Chloe Williams in the 33rd minute and the winner from freshman Devan Talley in the 81st minute.

“We used a lot of players as it was very hot,” EWU head coach Chad Bodnar said. “I saw a lot of grit from a group trying to gel.”

EWU’s match against New Mexico State was decided in the 108th minute on a goal from senior Tasha Luu. Freshman Emily Bringgold scored in the 31st minute to give Eastern a 1-0 lead. This victory was another record breaker, being the first time Eastern has won in double overtime since 2002.

“We played in some of the toughest conditions possible this weekend,” Bodnar said. “We travelled a long way, played in extreme heat, in altitude, and against a team today that didn’t have a game on Friday and were fresh.”

The Eagles are hoping to carry forth the young team’s tenacity, facing Cal State Bakersfield (4-0) for the fifth time in program history. The last time these teams met, Eastern scored a 3-0 victory, outshooting the Roadrunners 14-8.

The Eagles will then take the road to Portland to face Cal Davis (2-0) on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m.
