Five homes were destroyed and nine people left homeless after a fire caused by a windstorm raced through Silver Lake’s Picnic Pines RV and trailer park.

A proposed Medical Lake farmers market closed before it ever opened after a half dozen vendors decided not to participate when they learned there was no advertising budget to promote it.

After serving six years as associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator, Pam Parks was named interim EWU athletic director following the departure of Scott Barnes who took a position at the University of Washington.

Aug. 10, 1995

Fairchild Air Force Base underwent a change of command as Brig. Gen. Gary Voellger turned over the reigns of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing to Brig. Gen. Arthur Lichte.

The Cheney School District will have a slightly new look in the administration office as Dr. Annette Granier was named new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, replacing Terry Brandon who accepted a position as the superintendent of the Pomeroy School District.

Aug. 15, 1985

Cheney’s quest for a larger library received a big boost when residents Ted and Hannah Stahlborn agreed to donate the building in which the library resides to the city rent free.

Drought conditions were beginning to affect the area animal population according to Washington Department of Game officials. Many animals were seen at lower elevations in search of green forage.

Football practice for Eastern Washington University’s second season in NCAA Division I play was about to begin as head coach Dick Zornes was welcoming 38 letter winners and 13 starters from a 7-2-1 team.

Aug. 13, 1965

Eastern Washington State College planned to spent $12.9 million in capital projects, the largest in the 75 year history of the school.

Cheney residents were presented with news of a planned extension of the city’s new leash law from six to 12 months. Discussion at a recent Cheney City Council meeting met with mixed opinions.

Medical Lake’s Darrel Cogswell won a first place trophy in the G Class in drag racing competition held at the Deer Park Drag Strip.
