Medical Lake School District is giving a select group of students opportunities to get a jump start on the upcoming school year by offering two extended learning programs this month.

One program is a learning assistance program for kindergarten through third-grade at Hallett and Michael Anderson elementary schools. It is an intensive reading program for students who scored below the basic standards on the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The other is an extended school year program for special education students who have specific IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals.

“Both programs address the need for students who need additional time in the school year,” Kim Headrick, director of teaching and learning ,said. “It’s to help them get a jump start on the year.”

Headrick added the district is holding both programs in August as a way to mitigate learning loss over the summer.

“Research shows that August shows much more effective learning for students during the summer than in June and July,” Headrick said. “You can get kids ready for the school year without the risk of learning loss.”

The reading program has a science theme built around it and will help students read, dissect, retain and pull information from texts.

As for the extended learning program, it addresses specific goals based on the students’ needs, which include writing, reading and mathematics.

“For some students, it’s educational and for some it’s emotional and social needs,” Headrick said.

Both programs will run Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 11-13 and 18-20, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the middle school. The district will also provide transportation if needed.
