The good news keeps coming for the Spokane Tribe Economic Project (STEP).

In a news release, the Spokane Tribe of Indians announced they had signed a letter of intent with HRHH IP, LLC (Hard Rock Hotel Holdings, LLC) to bring the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino facility to its proposed mixed-use entertainment development, located off Highway 2 and Craig Road near Spoko Fuel in Airway Heights. In addition to the casino, the site will feature a tribal cultural center and a police and fire station. Financial agreements for the deal were not disclosed in the news release.

Tribal Chairman Rudy Peone said the Spokane Tribe is proud to be working with HRHH IP, LLC as it will provide a unique experience in dining, retail and entertainment for the area.

“My excitement for the STEP project is now doubled knowing that it will be anchored by a nationally-recognized brand,” Peone said.

This is the latest development for STEP. Earlier this month, Kevin Washburn, assistant secretary for the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs, wrote a letter to Gov. Jay Inslee, supporting STEP and saying that it would enhance tribal service programs and not be detrimental to the area, including nearby Fairchild Air Force Base. Before building can begin, Inslee must concur with Interior’s analysis. His office is currently reviewing the letter.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is one of the most recognizable names and brands worldwide and are premier entertainment destinations. According to its website, the franchise has over 192 locations, which include restaurants, hotels, casinos and live music venues, in 60 countries.

If Inslee approves the project and a Hard Rock Cafe and Casino gets constructed in Airway Heights, it would be the franchise’s first facility in Spokane County.

Hard Rock recently built a casino and restaurant in Sioux City, Iowa. Peone said he spoke to Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott about working with the franchise.

“He had nothing but good things to say about their relationship,” Peone said.

Peone said one of the factors in choosing to partner with Hard Rock was the franchise’s ability to work with the community where they operate a facility.

“We are willing to work with any community group or business that wants to work with us and Hard Rock does that,” Peone said. “When you work closely with the community as they do, it creates a sense of community ownership.”
