Kenady creates healthy Hobbit House for Books2Eat

Homeschooler Bradley Kenady of Medical Lake didn't end up having the winning entry in this year's Eastern Washington University Books2Eat competition but it certainly was interesting and drew its share of attention.

The 12-year-old's inspiration for his entry centered around his love of the book, "The Hobbit," by J. R. R. Tolkien. Kenady broke the mold of concocting generally sweet treats with his Hobbit House creation built from a loaf of Italian bread, lettuce, broccoli and salad croutons.

"We wanted to do more of a healthy thing with all the deserts and stuff," Kenady said.

The main Hobbit hole is made of bread, lettuce makes up the roof and the door is made of the cubed croutons.

Kenady was also careful to add detail only an avid Tolkien reader would notice with his Hobbit House door. In the movie the wizard marks a symbol on the door to let the dwarfs know which house to go to and Kenady did the same with the use of a wood burning tool.

Books2Eat is staged yearly at Kennedy Library and hopes to provide a different activity for those who use the facility.

The top-two vote getters in the May 18 competition included Pete the Cat: Cavecat by Cole Cullen (People's Choice) and Sandra Espinoza-Montes (Theme award).
