Eastern Washington University’s president, Dr. Stephen Jordan, announced he was leaving the school to take a similar position at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colo. Provost and vice president of academic affairs, Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich, was named as interim president.

The U.S. Army confirmed the death of Chief Warrant Officer Clint Prather, a Cheney High School grad who was among 18 soldiers killed in the crash of a helicopter in Afghanistan.

Medical Lake High School’s baseball team swept their three games with Colville and improved to 3-1 in the Great Northern League and 5-1 overall. Jon O’Connor’s RBI double scored the winning run in a 5-4 Cardinal win.

April 13, 1995

The Cheney School District’s most recent budget will end in the black, a change from the previous school year when expenses came in at $21.6 million on revenue of $20.8 million.

John Wade, who had an unsuccessful five-year run as head basketball coach at EWU, did not have his contract renewed. Wade was given a $75,000 settlement, equal to a year’s salary, after finishing 34-98 overall and 13-61 in Big Sky Conference play.

April 25, 1985

The Cheney Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors cast their support behind a resolution in favor of EWU’s proposed move of their athletics program to the Big Sky Conference.

Two former members of President Ronald Reagan’s cabinet, Secretary of Education Terrell Bell, and William Ruckelshaus, most recently the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, were named to the EWU Academy-Business-Community-Lecture Series.

Launi Meili of Cheney and EWU was named as one of 49 collegiate shooters to earn the title of 1985 National Rifle Association All-Americans.

April 16, 1975

Taxpayers in the Cheney School District were going to receive a combined $217,000 in refunds on their tax bills resulting from refinancing $3.5 million worth of bonds for construction of the new middle school.

In the true mission of Expo 74 World Fair, Eastern Washington State College recently purchased signs from the event. The repurposed signs would be used to direct people on campus and cost $61 each in an auction.

EWSC national wrestling champion Lanny Davidson from Ephrata was selected for a month-long trip to Asia to be in international competition.

50 Years Ago

April 17, 1965

Cheney’s latest population count was expected to increase by about 150 people to a total of 3,746 according to the latest census data.

Senate Bill 520, adopted in a special session of the Washington Legislature, approved $1.5 million to fund a new library at EWSC.

EWSC’s track team, led by sprinter Dean Adams, remained undefeated following wins over Whitworth 107-38 and 77-68 over Western Washington.
