The Eastern Washington University student activities office was considering opening the former 24 Frames Cinema as both a theater and a general recreation center.

Some of the opposition by EWU to a proposed city of Cheney admission tax on university events was a matter that the school thought it was already being charged enough and provided “a great deal for the town.”

Second-seeded Medical Lake earned a berth in the district playoffs and improved its record to 17-4 with a 51-36 win over Chewelah. The Cards’ Drew Richardson scored 19 points in the victory.

March 2, 1995

Key Tronics invited 70 workers back to the formerly closed building to work on a temporary basis. Efforts were being made to find a permanent tenant for the facility on the west side of Cheney.

The Cheney Lady Hawks girls’ basketball team remained undefeated at 22-0 following wins of 60-42 over West Valley and 38-34 over Pullman. Freshman Anna Getz scored 18 points to lead Cheney against West Valley while Lisa Anderson’s eight points were tops against Pullman. Cheney needed just one more win to advance to state.

March 7, 1985

The small plane that was found Feb. 18 in a pasture south of Cheney was identified by authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration as one of two aircraft operated illegally by members of a neo-Nazi organization. Two Idaho men, Glen C. McCoy and Nicholas McCoy were being sought.

Medical Lake Schools Superintendent Duane Heidenreich had his contract extended for an additional year by a unanimous vote of the school board.

The Cheney boys’ basketball team, ranked second in the state in the 2A polls, saw its season end following losses in district play to Toppenish 41-39 and Hanford 47-46 as a long shot by the Blackhawks’ Jason Kent fell short at the buzzer.

March 6, 1975

Recognizing that the concept of merging the positions of the police chief and fire chief was not popular, Cheney Mayor Jerry Blakley instructed the Cheney Civil Service Commission to begin the process refilling the position of fire chief.

Should classified employees and college professors at Eastern Washington State College not receive respective 11 and 10 percent raises, there was talk that each could go on strike.

Seven EWSC wrestlers left by van to drive to the NAIA national championships in Sioux City, Iowa. They included: Lanny Davidson undefeated at 177 pounds, Kirk DeLong (118), Rich Colwell (135), Steve Vaughn (142), Tony Byrne (150), Jerry Thew (177) and Keith Byrnes (190).

March 3, 1965

The Cheney School District sought approval of a second levy in a March 16 election that would provide funding for improved playfields at area schools, allow building a new track and football field at the high school, plus purchase two new busses.

A call for bids went out to area contractors for a new building to house equipment for the Cheney Fire Department.
