AH council says Sunset Park project complete

The Airway Heights City Council breezed through another short agenda at its March 2 meeting.

The council accepted the completion of the Sunset Park Restroom/Sidewalk Project. Parks, Recreation and Community Director J.C. Kennedy explained that WM Winkler Company completed construction on the project and it has met staff's standards.

Councilman Dave Malet asked about the timeline for when staff will install the splash pad. Kennedy said they are preparing for the landscaping work.

"We can install the spray apparatus above ground pretty much at any time," Kennedy said. "I'm anticipating that we'll wait until we've got the landscaping done. We have all of the pieces in the shop."

Kennedy also filled out an application with the Spokane Regional Health District for temporary food permits. He plans to have a celebration on Saturday, May 23, with the Rotary Club of Spokane West for the splash pad's grand opening.

The council accepted the letter of understanding to extend the agreement between the city and Waste Management for solid waste removal services until June 2.

Prior to approval, City Manager Albert Tripp said he would like to discuss how the city could use some of the money it saves from tipping fees adjustments. In November, Airway Heights entered into an agreement with Spokane County and the city of Spokane for solid waste services with gate fees costing $70.50 per ton.

The council appointed Ciarra Gay to the Airway Heights Youth Advisory Commission. Kennedy said Gay was already volunteering prior to her appointment to the commission.

"She helped us make decorations for the Daddy Daughter Dance," Kennedy said. "She hit the ground running."

Council approved a resolution that proclaimed Feb. 21 as "Bennie Wells Day" in Airway Heights in honor of his passing and his accomplishments. Bernie Wells, a resident of Airway Heights since 1957, passed away Feb. 12. He spent his final year at the Spokane Veterans' Home. Mayor Patrick Rushing said he lowered the flags in the city Feb. 21 when he learned of Wells' passing.

In other business:

• The council approved the first reading of Ordinance C-853, which amends sections of the Airway Heights Municipal Code Chapter 2.16.060, "Duties of Advisory Park Board."

• Clerk-treasurer Richard Cook announced that the March 2 meeting would be his last legislative session and his retirement is effective March 13.
