Cheney High hosts basketball regional round

If you’re still looking for some quality high school basketball action, look no further than the Cheney High School gym this weekend.

Cheney is the host site for regional boys and girls state playoff basketball games in the 1B, 2B, 1A and 2A classifications. Action begins Friday evening with two games in the 1B classification, and wraps up Saturday with six games over the 2B – 2A brackets. Winners move on to the state quarterfinals in Yakima and Spokane March 5 – 7.

“I’ve got some big names here,” tournament director and Blackhawks athletics director Jim Missel said.

The five-time defending champion Colton girls open play at 6 p.m. Friday night, taking on Almira-Coulee-Hartline, who lost to the Wildcats in the 1B title games in 2010 and 2011. In the nightcap, the A-C-H boys try to continue their run towards winning a second state title in three years as they face 2014 runner-up Pomeroy.

In 2B action Saturday, Warden faces Liberty at 10 a.m. in the boys bracket while the defending state champion Colfax girls take on Oroville at noon. At 2 p.m., Great Northern League champion and top ranked Clarkston (22-1) face No. 10 Sammamish (22-5), followed by GNL champion and eighth-ranked Pullman taking on River Ridge in girls play.

At 6 p.m., the Northeast A League champs Lakeside boys face La Salle, with the Rams’ girls taking on Naches Valley at 8 p.m.

All-day tickets are $10 adults, and $8 for seniors and students.
