A proposed city admissions tax of 5 percent on ticket sales of over $10 each was met with disapproval from officials at Eastern Washington University, largely because they were not informed by the city in advance of the measure being voted upon.
The second annual “Best of the West” awards dinner was termed a sound success after attracting over 100 people to the event sponsored by the West Plains Chamber of Commerce.
Seven members of the Medical Lake wrestling team advanced to Mat Classic XVII in Tacoma, including individual champions Brad Groce at 152 pounds, David Snyder (140), Justin Propeck (130) and Tony Fino (112).

Concerns over the future of birds and other wildlife were the center of heated debate at a recent Cheney Planning Commission meeting. Xn Technologies founder Alan Hale sought zoning changes in order build a new manufacturing facility.
The Cheney School District was planning on reinstituting a series of public forums that would provide important information to patrons, plus solicit response from residents.
Anna Goetz scored 19 points and Erin Soliday 17 as the Cheney Lady Hawks beat West Valley 63-50, improving their Frontier League record to 10-0 and a perfect 20-0 heading into the final week of the regular season.

It remained a mystery who crash landed a small single-engine airplane about seven miles south of Cheney. The plane was discovered about a quarter-mile off of Cheney-Plaza Road and south of Luke Road.
EWU President H. George Frederickson and his counterpart at Washington State University, President Glenn Terrell, tossed a wrench into plans to merge the two universities through legislation nicknamed “The Sommers Bill,” titled in honor of its sponsor, Helen Sommers (D-Seattle). The presidents, instead suggested a joint effort to form a joint center for engineering and technology.
Two Cheney High School wrestlers, Wayne Harrington at 168 pounds and 115-pound Tim Mason took fifth and sixth respectively at the State AA Wrestling Tournament held at the EWU Pavilion.

The city of Cheney was considering combining the leadership jobs of both the fire and police departments into one public safety director’s position, similar to what is done in Pullman.
A Uniform Building Code was adopted by the Cheney City Council with an emphasis on new rules concerning how to deal with what might be deemed unsafe buildings.
Eastern Washington closed out 30 years of play in Memorial Fieldhouse by scoring men’s basketball wins, 84-81 versus Southern Oregon and 86-64 against nationally-ranked Oregon Institute of Technology. Ron Cox and Bernie Hite led the Eagles offensively.

Eastern Washington State College was seeking to have a road connecting Washington Street to U.S. Highway 10 (now State Route 904) near where the Northern Pacific Railroad tracks cross the highway.
The Cheney School District’s Citizen Advisory Committee was meeting to consider a $116,000 special levy that would purchase furniture for the new high school, develop new playfields and build a new football field and track among other things.
Cheney got pins from Allan Scott at 106 pounds, Rick Miller (115), Vern Scott (123), Bill Purvis (130), Frank Ragains (148), Keith Koch (157), Barry Sapp (178) and Barry Horton in the unlimited class in a 52-0 thrashing of Colville in a Northeast A League wrestling match.
