Eastern finishes fourth in final FCS polls

The Eastern Washington University football team ended the postseason the way it started by ranking fourth in a pair of final NCAA Football Championship Subdivision polls announced Jan. 12.

The Eagles finished fourth in The Sports Network Top 25 Poll of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. In the Coaches Poll, Eastern was also fourth. The only teams ahead of EWU were four-time FCS champion North Dakota State, runner-up Illinois State and semifinalist New Hampshire. Eastern was ranked first in the TSN preseason poll.

Both polls can be found in the West Plains Scoreboard found on page 3.

Overall, this is the 12th time Eastern has finished the season nationally ranked, including eight times since 2004. The other seasons were in 1985, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. The Eagles were third in 2013, fourth in 2012 and first in 2010 after winning the NCAA Division I title.

Four years after capturing the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision title, the Eagles finished the 2014 season 11-3 overall and won the outright Big Sky Conference title for the second-straight season. Eastern garnered its 17th winning season in the last 19 years, including playoff berths in eight of the last 11 seasons.

Hamlin earns Academic All-Star honor

A senior twice over, Eastern Washington University linebacker Ronnie Hamlin has been selected to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Director’s Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star team for the second-straight season.

Hamlin is a 2009 graduate of Timberline High School in Lacey, Wash., and has a 3.54 grade point average as a construction management and mechanical engineering major.

Hamlin, who finished with 473 career tackles to become the all-time leader in EWU and Big Sky Conference history, was honored in 2013 as well. After being granted a sixth year by the NCAA to replace two others wiped out by knee injuries, Hamlin is one of 50 players named to this year’s squad.

He repeated as an All-American in 2014 after earning second team honors from College Sports Madness and fourth team accolades from Beyond Sports Network.
