Jeff Sale officially became Cheney's newest police chief following the completion of a five-month transition from his former post with the Washington State Patrol.

The Republican Party's 70-year hold on the 9th Legislative District remained intact as voters promoted state Rep. Mark Schoesler to the Senate. David Buri earned his seat in the House where Schoesler had previously served.

The Medical Lake girls' cross country team earned its first berth to state in 12 years, placing second to Lakeside. Ali Nelson finished seventh in a time of 21 minutes, 20 seconds to lead the Cardinal runners.

Nov. 3, 1994

With plans in the works to expand the Country Counter IGA grocery store from 12,000 to over 28,000 square feet, owner Mitch Moczulski requested the Cheney City Council vacate a portion of K Street between First and Second streets.

Lashund Lambert was named king and Melanie Tucker queen in festivities associated with Eastern Washington University Homecoming.

The Cheney boy's cross country team, led by Ryan Puling's first-place finish on the course at Hangman Valley Golf Course, qualified for the state AA championship. Jeanette Zimmer finished second on the girls' side and qualified for state, too.

Oct. 31, 1984

The departure of the El Nino weather pattern that brought the area a warmer winter last year will usher in a colder than normal winter in 1984-85, EWU meteorology professor Bob Quinn said in his annual prediction.

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Tom Foley earned an easy return to the U.S. House of Representatives by defeating Jack Hebner in the general election by a count of 100,479 – 43,890 votes.

Cheney's 34-7 football victory over Medical Lake concluded the season for the Blackhawks who finished with a 7-2 record. John Beauvais scored twice for Cheney.

Nov. 7, 1974

The Expo '74 express steam locomotive made its way home to Portland by passing through Cheney following the run of the Spokane World's Fair that officially closed Sunday, Nov. 3. The impressive old-fashioned Union Pacific locomotive had a brief whistle stop in Cheney that drew a small crowd of people.

Jerry Kopet was one of the few upset winners in the general election as he ousted Bill Parsons by a margin of 52.5 – 47.5 percent for the 3rd District seat on the Spokane County Commission.

EWU's football team took a 4-2 record into the final regular season game of the season at Woodward Field against Central Washington with hopes of winning the Evergreen Conference title.

Nov. 6, 1964

Students at Cheney's Betz Elementary School participated in a mock election and results mirrored those seen in local and national races. They selected incumbent Lyndon Johnson over Barry Goldwater for president, Dan Evans over Albert Rosellini for governor and in the upset, Tom Foley over incumbent Walt Horan in the 5th District race for Congress.

Two teams on opposite ends of the standings, Cheney and Colfax, were preparing to meet in the final football game of 1964 at Fisher Field in Cheney. Colfax, from the Southeast A League had a 7-2 record and was coached by Clayton Dunn. Cheney lost its eighth consecutive game 31-14 to Medical Lake the previous weekend.
