All are invited to Tyler Grange's annual Harvest Dinner

Of Cabbages and Kings

There’s an old saying that a person sometimes hums, “mm-mm, good,” when they walk into a room where something is cooking. If you’re thinking of food, you’re right on target. The folks at Tyler Grange are preparing for their annual Harvest Dinner on Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar.

I wonder how many years the Tyler Grange members have opened their doors to friends, relatives and neighbors in the community, giving their hospitality on this traditional, friendly evening?

Tyler Grange provides the dinner basics: potatoes, gravy and a perfectly cooked turkey. We, the guests, bring salads, fruits, casseroles, pie or whatever you would like to contribute to the tables that are loaded with a variety of food.

Speaking of pie, remember, if you’ve been to a Harvest Dinner, how much fun it is when the auctioneer begins to say, “Who’ll give me $10, $20, $25,” and you start to dream of that luscious homemade prize sitting on your table at home. Good-hearted rivalry and laughter fills the room. Those who have contributed the enticing items are happy to see the enthusiasm of the bidders. The winners can be extra proud, knowing their purchase has helped a worthy cause.

Local merchants generously give door prizes every year for children and adults.

Now, as the time draws near, Tyler Grange invites the community to the function. Lyle Polack has his own way of reminding us, “Grab the kids and join your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled evening on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.”

We’ll be watching for you.
