Lakeside rolls over Medical Lake in AA Legion play

It was pretty much over shortly after it started for Medical Lake’s AA American Legion baseball team this past Monday in Suncrest.

With Lakeside scoring six runs in the first inning, two more in the second and three in the third, the home team rolled to an 11-3 Federal League win.

Medical Lake (7-3) suffered through a game that saw them commit six errors prompting head coach Kerry Kelly to struggle for words to describe the day against Lakeside (8-2).

“I don’t know what to say,” Kelly said. “Nothing went right, offensively, defensively, pitching.” That was not exactly the truth as Cory Wagner collected three of Medical Lake’s eight hits and Hudson Petek, two. Both had a double among their totals.

“To Lakeside’s credit they hit the ball and did the things they needed to do and we didn’t,” Kelly said.

Now the focus switches to this week’s Woodbat Classic in which Medical Lake hosts a pod that includes teams from Walla Walla, Pendleton, Ore., Juanita, Wash. and Gonzaga Prep.

There’s a different mindset for these games, Kelly said. “I don’t feel near the pressure I feel during our regular season.”

The Woodbat is just kind of a special time, he explained. “As a coach it brings me back to my childhood, remembering my Fourth of Julys playing and how much fun we had.”

“We really look forward to Woodbat and hosting the tournament,” Kelly said.

Then it’s back to business starting next week. Medical Lake was to have played a pair of games against Freeman (9-0) but games last Thursday and Friday were rained out. They have been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 8 at Medical Lake and Tuesday, July 15 in Freeman.
