SummerHawks continue streak with Whitman County win

The Cheney AA American Legion baseball team extended their winning streak to four games after a 13-4 victory over Whitman County, June 23, in Federal League play.

The SummerHawks took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Although Whitman County scored three runs in the third and one in the fifth, Cheney answered with a seven-run fourth and a three-run fifth.

Several Cheney players shined with the bat, including Kyle Jones, Riley Jones, Anthony Hartman, and Trey Martin, all collecting singles. Cameron Marchand and Chance Gleave had doubles and Shane Hammel had a triple.

SummerHawks manager Kadeem Smalls said he was proud of the way the team is playing so far and that they need to play more consistently.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this team has the ability to be dangerous,” Smalls said. “We’re getting there, but we’re not quite there yet.”

After their June 24 game against North Central, Cheney is at home for their next four games. They play East Valley in a league doubleheader, June 27, at 3:30 p.m.

“I haven’t seen a lot of East Valley, but I know their school team is good,” Smalls said. “We just have to worry about what we’re doing and make sure we’re prepared for them.”

On Monday, June 30, the SummerHawks will play a rematch with Pullman in a nonleague contest at home at 5:30 p.m. Pullman handed Cheney their second defeat of the season earlier in the month.

The next day the SummerHawks play North Central in nonleague play at 5:30 p.m.
