Fitzgerald named Cheney schools' new K-12 Options Program coordinator

Cheney School District teacher Ryan Fitzgerald has been named the district’s new K-12 Options Program coordinator. Fitzgerald replaces Shannon Lawson, who has been named principal of Spokane Public School’s Montessori school.

A 1994 graduate of Boston College with a master’s in education from Gonzaga University and degree in educational leadership from Eastern Washington University, Fitzgerald has been with Cheney district since 2006. He has been an English teacher, high school varsity boys’ basketball coach, summer school coordinator and assistant principal at Cheney High School, and more recently has been at Westwood Middle School.

Prior to coming to Cheney, Fitzgerald taught English at Liberty High School, Shadle Park High School and began his teaching career at Brewster Junior/Senior High School.

As the K-12 Options Program coordinator, Fitzgerald will act as lead administrator for both the Home Works! parent partnership program and Three Springs High School.

“I am driven by a genuine love and respect for all kids,” Fitzgerald said in a district news release. “The quintessential piece of a successful learning environment is a shared vision. This can only be attained through the fostering of quality relationships and meaningful collaboration at all levels of the educational landscape.”

Fitzgerald begins his new position this July. He will also oversee programs serving students across all of the district’s schools, including those that support homeless students and students learning the English language.
