The Cheney High School boys’ tennis team wrapped up another season after they traveled to Pullman to compete in districts. In team scores, Cheney finished fourth overall.
In singles action, senior Solomon Springberry advanced to the semifinals after he came back from a one-set deficit to beat Pullman’s Josh Sewell, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3.
“That was good for him” boys’ tennis head coach Jesse Erickson said. “Solomon looked like a completely different player after that first set. He played the best he has all season.”
In the next round, he lost to West Valley’s Chris Myers, who went on to finish in second place.
Luke Huguenin defeated Deer Park’s Mike Duarte in his first match, then lost to Clarkston’s Ryan Adams, who went on to win the tournament.
Tristan Bennett also competed in singles, losing to Pullman’s Peter Chen in his first match.
In doubles, the team of Mason Van Stone and Ryan Axtell beat East Valley’s Dakota Sargent and Sean Haight.
“They made too many errors in that first set, but then ended with solid play,” Erickson said.
Van Stone and Axtell were eliminated in the next round after losing to Pullman’s Alec Mitchell and Curtis Jeffery.
Although they didn’t place, Van Stone and Axtell were selected for the All League Team, positions of which are voted by the coaches.
Shogo Starr and Adam Passey dropped their first round match to Clarkston’s Jake Oldfield and Taylor Lane.
Talmadge Dickson and Brandon Foster lost their match against Clarkston’s Gregory Arther and Colby Savage.
Prior to districts, the Blackhawks finished their regular season with an 8-7 record and a fourth place finish in the Great Northern League.
The team will be losing Bennett, Springberry and Dickson to graduation. Erickson said that this year’s group was “really “sophomore heavy” and that several players will come in next year with varsity experience.
“We’ll pretty much have the same team next year,” Erickson said. “The future is looking really good for us.”
