A pair of 1957 Mercury Meteors, owned by Cheney's Tyler and Marcie Watson, and a 1964 Mercury owned by Rathdrum, Idaho's Jerry Flowers were some of the vehicles taking part a May 18 show presented by Cheney's new car club, Stars Stripes, Boots and Spurs.
Jay and Sherrie McNall have been pretty involved the last four years in supporting and organizing the Cheney Junior Rodeo and have annually battled the same recurring question: How to raise money to support the rodeo. Not long ago the couple was sitting around asking that question when an idea came to them.
"Sherrie loves rodeo, and I love classic cars," Jay McNall said. "We were sitting, looking at each other and started drawing pictures and we came up with a logo."
That logo is for Cheney's new car club, Stars Stripes, Boots and Spurs car club, an organization whose main function is to help fund the Junior Rodeo. The club has also teamed up with the organization Time of Remembrance to provide assistance to area military veterans and their families.
McNall said the club currently has 10 members and is looking for more. Members pay a $20 annual membership fee.
The club has joined the regional organization Inland Northwest Car Club Council in order to spread the word about their existence and take part in area car shows and other activities where vehicles might be displayed. They have also joined the Spokane Raceway Association.
McNall said it costs about $12,000 to stage the Junior Rodeo, which this year is Aug. 2-3. Stars Stripes, Boots and Spurs began its support of this event with its first car show May 18 at Cheney's J & M Collision, attracting 49 entries from its members, other clubs and individuaal auto enthusiasts.
The show awarded trophies in five categories, featured food from Toby's BBQ and raffled off a home barbecue donated by Lowes in Spokane. All of these activities combined helped the show raise $575 for the Junior Rodeo and an equal amount for Time for Remembrance.
McNall said other events are planned to fundraise for the rodeo, such as a car wash this Saturday, June 7, at Cheney Trading Company, a rummage sale July 12 back at J & M and a golf tournament July 27 at the Fairways. The car club had vehicles recently at Cheney Mayfest, and plans to have vehicles on display at the rodeo grounds during Cheney Rodeo, July 11-13.
McNall said he is also working with people in Tyler to hopefully have cars at the upcoming Tyler Daze. The club may do a poker run, he said, but that would likely happen after the August rodeo.
